The Invisible Man

The Invisible Man isn't a magician at all. He is just invisible to the white society in the early and mid 1900s. He feels he is invisible because he has to act like an other person, or he will be grouped with uneducated blacks from the south. The narrator is a great public speaker, and gets college scholar ships and positions in the Brotherhood a group that is said to help the community. However, every thing he does always seems to fall apart. I feel if the IM would of just acted how he wanted without worrying about what other people thought of him he would of lead a much better life with out so many bumps along the way.

Ideology in The House of the Spirits

There are many examples of Ideology in The House of the Spirits. Through out this essay I will focus on the ideological ideas of Esteban Trueba, and how they created and destroyed the deranged marriage of Blanca and Jean de Satigny.
“Ideology, in the end, is what you think before you think or act.” This causes Esteban and his family problems throughout the story. His ideological views are mystified by his actions. You get the idea that Esteban wants no close contact with the lower class workers. Conversely, in the second chapter he rapes and impregnates a young poor woman. Later on when he discovers that Blanca is romantically involved with Pedro Tercero he snaps and beats Blanca and his wife Clara. He sets up harsh morals for his family to follow but then goes out and breaks them himself.
Esteban Trueba forces Blanca and Jean to marry, after he finds out that she is pregnant with Pedro Trecero’s child. Esteban chooses Jean because he knows Jean will do anything to get his hands on Esteban’s money. I feel this is an example of descriptive ideology in the sense that Esteban wants to have his daughter marry a man who comes from a wealthy background such as herself, not out of love. This causes problems.
The wedding dress that Esteban has his daughter wear is mystifying, concealing the fact she is pregnant. After the two get married we start to find out who Jean really is. He sets up a false consciousness for Blanca by hiring Indians as servants. The Indians that are hired and do not do a decent job taking care of chores. Never the less, Blanca does not realize that they are not there to be servants, but to feed Jeans strange locked up fetishes. Once she discovers what was going on behind closed doors she quickly leaves Jean.

Antigone in the hood post

If I was to re-write Antigone i would have the setting be in the hood. Polynices would of been killed in a drive by shooting, and Creon would be a gang leader that said that no one will pour a fourty out for Polynices, but at a party Antigone does so. Creon finds Antigone and duck tapes in a Brooklyn basement. Creon asks Antigone to beg for forgivness, but Antigone refuses. Gang members start to rally against Creon and over throw him.

Cortez Post

This story was a mexican tall tale. Much like Paul Bunyon and Casey Jones, Cortez portrayed as a larger than life character that rebels against the killing of his brother and then goes on the run, excaping hundreds of Texas rangers and killing a few of them on the way. There are many versions of this story all with the same plot but with subtle changes in details. The real story however is much less exciting, but that is expected in fokelore. This is a good story to tell young mexican childern so they can have pride in there heritage. I feel that there are so many different versions beacause the story was told through song, so the author just tried to rhyme instead of following the facts. An good quote from the Toobox that relates to this story is "Because factual accounts of the past involve this process of selection and emphasis, they turn out to be interpertations, or constructions of history rather than objective reconstructions of past realities."

Blood Wedding

This is an other story about false love. Leonardo is the only character in the stoy with a name, and he is the one who steals the brides heart and she runs away with him. Im sure the fact that he is the only one with a name symbolies something to do with self and subject. Without having names the other characters seem to just go with the flow and do not really have any control of their lives being subjects. Leonardo however might be a subject to love and cant control his actions either. Its all just real confusing. Through out the story Lorca uses a ton of colors and symbols to forshawdow. The moon was also in this stoy, but it wasnt your normal moon. This moon was a character. It caught me off guard but when the moon is agaisnt you lighting up the woods you are trying to hide in, youre in trouble.

The Awakening

This story was about a womans troubles with love in the late 1800s. Edna had everything that a woman could want, a successful husband 2 good kids, and a beach house. However just because everything seemed perfect it wasnt. Edna wanted more excitement and she felt like she just wanted to do whatever she wanted, and not be held down by popular belief. She ends up having an affair and moving away from her family to a shack. She finally starts being truely happy, but then the town starts to realize what shes up to. I feel bad for Edna, but at the same time its her fault for getting married and having children with a person that she was not truely in love with. She ends up getting stood up by her lover and she gets really upset and kills herself by swimming out to sea. I think its funny if a woman cheats on her husband its called an awakening and a great novel is made, and if a man cheats on a woman its just bad news and a lot of yelling.

The Yellow Wallpaper

This story represents the miss treatment of women during the late 1800s. Instead of letting Jane doing what she feels best her husband locks her up in a nursery with yellow wallpaper. I feel that Janes husband John ment well and felt he was doing the right thing, but just because he is a doctor he ignors her regression during the treament. Jane eventually goes crazy and starts to rip down the yellow wall paper that covers the wall. I think if John allowed Jane to take care of her baby and keep busy instead of being isolated to dwell on everything; she would of been fine, but then again who listenes to crazy women.
